One of the leading casual dining chains in India, Barbeque Nation pioneered the concept of “over the table barbeque” live grills embedded in dining tables – allowing guests to grill their own barbecue’s right at their tables.

The Barbeque Nation app offers convenient table reservations, easy food ordering, and access to exclusive offers for a seamless dining experience.

The main goal is redesigning the app to simplify the app’s navigation, improve the reservation process, revamp the menu browsing experience and to provide users with a seamless, intuitive, visually appealing interface that aligns with the Barbeque Nation's brand identity, incorporating their logo, color scheme, and visual elements throughout the app.

As someone who doesn’t like to interact much with other people, I wanted to plan an outdoor party for my family. That’s when I found this app to reserve a table. Right away, I noticed the design wasn’t the most appealing, which made me wonder if the whole booking process would work smoothly. Thankfully, I did manage to book a table! But it got me thinking about ways the app’s user experience could be improved, so I started diving into research and exploring ways to improve its design.

The current UI of the Barbeque Nation app has several usability and functionality issues:

  • Difficult for users to navigate through the app

  • Making reservations is not intuitive

  • Exploring the menu for food delivery/takeaway is less visually appealing.

As a result of these problems, the user experience is poor, customer satisfaction is decreased, and opportunities for increased engagement and loyalty are missed. A redesign is necessary to address these problems and create a user-friendly app that enhances overall satisfaction for Barbeque Nation's users.

Key Insights:

  • Users found the app’s UI to be very poor which made them want to uninstall it instantly.

  • Navigating the app was difficult for the users as the menu was misleading for them.

  • Booking reservations was also a challenge for the users as the process was not seamless.

  • Users were frustrated with the delivery options of the app as it lacked intuitiveness and poor user experience.

After doing my secondary research by going through all the reviews and feedback given by various users in the Google play store for this app, I was able to understand the pain points and needs of the user.

Key Insights:

I also conducted a survey asking 10 people about their experience with the app and the challenges they faced. This helped me to focus on real-time users and understand their pain points.

  • Reserving a table is a task for people who want to book a table easily and efficiently.

  • Users find it difficult to order food items without any discounts, offers and recommendations.

  • Due to the existing poor UI, users find it difficult to navigate throughout the app.

  • The existing UI is not user friendly due to which the overall user experience of the app becomes poor.

I created 3 personas to understand their pain points and expectations. This was very helpful for me to focus on target users and not to lose sight who to design for.

I performed deep analysis of functional competitors and extracted important features. While doing this research, I investigated 4 apps to gather insights into their strengths and weaknesses.

Next, I created a user flow for the application. This process helped me decide how the app’s user experience might be designed to cater to the user’s needs.

I worked on the medium fidelity and mapped the basic user flows to have an MVP. The reason why I chose mid-fidelity instead of low-fidelity was because it will be easier for users to understand while iterating the design since I’m redesigning an existing app.

The journey was then tested with the users (using Maze app) to get real-time feedback and improve the final design.
